Protecting Our Backyard: BES Response to Ballina Council’s Biodiversity Offset Policy
The Ballina Environment Society (BES) recently shared feedback with Council regarding updates to the Biodiversity Offset Policy. While we applaud the move toward stronger environmental protections, we believe there is critical work still to be done—specifically regarding cumulative impacts.
Dear Oscar McMahon and Ballina Council
The Ballina Environment Society (BES) would like to commend you on the recent enhancements to the Biodiversity Offset Policy, which aim to increase local environmental protection. However, we are concerned about certain aspects, particularly the understanding and measurement of cumulative impacts within the shire.
Recent developments, including the construction of the fire brigade, SES building, and pump track, have resulted in the destruction of local native species that are crucial for local fauna and ecological connectivity. It is important to note that the offsets associated with these projects will take many years to become effective, especially in light of the significant loss occurring within a brief period. This delay can have serious impacts on our urban ecosystem and its resilience. Adding to this is the loss caused due to recent extreme weather events. We understand that this may be beyond council’s capacity but we must work together to support and increase the resilience and connectivity of our local environment.
We urge the council to consider further recommendations from Professor Samuel Graeme's report, which outlines important measures for addressing cumulative impacts. Specifically, related to our local TECs, improving data collection, monitoring biodiversity health, and developing proactive strategies to protect critical habitats are essential steps. This policy should clearly define how to balance development pressures with the immediate need for ecological preservation.
Addressing these issues can enhance the effectiveness of the policy and ensure that our local environment continues to thrive.
Thank you for considering our feedback.
Sincerely,
Ballina Environment Society
